Meta application icon Basic Search Technique

You can search in Meta the same way you do in Spotlight, but instead of typing your search into the Spotlight menu, you type it into Meta's search field in the Meta Search Window:

Meta Search Window, highlighting the search field at the top of the window.

To run a basic search, you would type the word or words you are looking for into the search field and press the Return key. For example:

stamp collecting

This query would tell Meta to search for documents containing the words "stamp" and "collecting", either in the document's file name, contents, or metadata. (What's metadata?)

Note that since this search only specifies that the two words have to appear somewhere in the file, in its name, or in its contents, it means that they could appear in any of those places, in any order. If you wanted to be more specific, you could wrap the two words in quotation marks, like this:

"stamp collecting"

This tells Meta that you specifically want it to show you files with the exact phrase, "stamp collecting", in the file's name, contents, or metadata.
